I was digging around the net for a solution to have shared net access on my Haweui MT841 modem (ADSL Gateway). It has 4 ethernet ports (that can be used as a switch), 1 USB and WIFI (which apparantly requires a separate PCMCIA card to get it working). My laptop doesn’t have an ethernet interface (I know its high time to upgrade) but it has an USB interface and I wanted the ADSL modem to act as a switch and also wanted ICS. Microsoft ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) will not work as the ethernet interface of the PC is used to connect using bsnl broadband and the same interface is used by PPPoe (PPP over ethernet). I serached the forums of http://vinuthomas.com, and found about wireless configuration of MT841. With that info and after saving the present configuration, I deleted all the PVCs and added a new PVC0 with PPPoe, gave the username and password. The BSNL DNS ip address for DNS was given and I also enabled DHCP on the modem. After saving the settings and rebooting the modem, it automatically connected to the net and I could access the net from my laptop and desktop.
ADSL modem configuration in a bridged as well as PPPoe configuration is not all that difficult.
The USB port is just like a USB to ethernet converter
The initial configuration that BSNL used to give was in a bridged fashion without PPPoe from the PC but later installations used PPoe from the PC.
Apparantly RASPPPoe lets you do Microsoft ICS and is more efficient than Microsoft version of PPPoe.
NiCd batteries and NiMh batteries have turned out to be cheaper these days.Looks like NiCd is being banned in most countries and they are being dumped to developing countries. Got two battery packs for my 2 cordless phones. Had to modify the connector for one of them. Also did cleaning of the keypads for one of them and it did work fine.
Looks like its difficult to get 600ohm transformer for the chatcord interface.
Well Iam updating the blogs, a day after. That doesn’t matter really, but easier to do early mornings. Now am in the mill updating the blogs.
Had a skype call from Jayesh, well this has turned out to be the normal thing to do.
Got up early yesterday at 4am. Went to Trichur to pick my sister and kid.Reached there in 3 hours, from Perambra. The return trip took more time. Had lunch at Calicut and did some shopping. Got the batteries of cordless phones, but did not get the transformer for connecting the sound card to phone. Returned home tired, went to mill and theatre, did the accounts. Worked on the cordless phone batteries and slept tired.
Was in the office, multitasking between billing, chatting, programming, attending calls and what not.
Got a call asking whether I was interested in installing digital cinema in our theatre. Something to think of, with so much of investment.
Kept the coin phone in our mill and got couple of calls, yet to install in our theatre.
Theatre staff has asked for a salary hike.Went walking to theatre for second show closing.
Now with broadband at home and office, I was connected at office and my wife at home. She called up and told she could see me chatting and I was wondering thinking it was VNC. But I was sure the vnc server was in user mode and it was not running. I tried kill all clients and still she could see my screen. I ran home and found that, it was skype. On a simultaneous login on 2 machines, both the machines will be updated with the same info. This is quite different from the usual IM scenario I guess. Also found that the contact list doesn’t seem to be updated automatically from the server even in the new version.
Got the skype delphi component and its project working. Still to tap messages and develop a chat client.
Some progress with IE Delphi program for dataone bandwidth usage tool. The main problem is getting hold of and parsing frames.
DynDNS seems to work finally with the client. The first problem was a spelling mistake, a missing n, then got rid of having two hosts for one ip. Tested winVNC with dydndns hostname and it worked fine.
Took another bsnl broadband connection. This time the modem came with a USB connection. It can act as a switch too. Too good an offer since I wanted both. There’s support for wireless too, but the pcmcia card that was supposed to be there was not in the carton. So now there’s 800 MB of download, all for free.
Yesterday went through the skype developer zone. It reminded me of the old VOIP thingie I used to do @ Telematics in Dubai. It was so exciting, but the major difference was the call quality.Found some interesting DIY projects including one for skype at http://www.grynx.com/. Lots of nice projects.
Thanks to BSNL its possible to have 2 simultaneous logins and logging in different place with same username for broadband. Life’s good. I can use my friends’ night unlimited connection and download service packs in the morning till 8am. And now the good news is that there’s the unlimited plan for Rs900. It would turn out cheaper if my brother in law in UAE takes broadband and does skype.
Work on the IE datone logger and ip mailer is going on without much progress as I get carried away, like a kid with a new toy, being broadband.
I am back home again after the trip to Ernakulam, Kotttayam. Actually the day after coming was just a day of updating accounts.
Took a break to Vegaland last Friday, was exciting. I am new to the world of amusement parks. But it was fun. Was a bit late on arrival, some rides are a waste or a mere repetition. Too bad that we didn’t have a camera. The neatness was worth mentioning. I also bought the book Practical Wisdom by Mr Kochouwseph Chittilapally the founder and man behind all this. I bought the Malayalam version as it was half the price and my mom could read it too.
Hope I could resume back to my old blogging style of keeping my diary daily.
